Sunlight, falling on your steel…

June 19th 2006 in Bout Log, Coaching, Fencing

Today, my thighs and knees are still killing me. Yesterday, I still had a hard time getting up after prolonged periods of sitting. Saturday night, as no doubt Corrie Ann, Ann Marie, and Cory will testify, I could barely walk. Why, you ask? Well, it’s all Maestro Alex Beguinet’s fault.

I truly do not think my legs have ever been put through such a workout before, and I was a varsity wrestler in high school. I’m thinking this is all just samples of things to come for coaches college, which is great because on top of the workout, I also learned a great deal.

Here’s a sample of what the two days of clinic I attended were like, learning wise. I do not think the pain and agony could be properly captured on film. Incidentally, this was the epee night of the clinic which is why the maestro is dressed in the heavier, almost full body coach's plastron and leg cover. In this snippet he’s discussing proper arm position for in-fighting.

Your experince is normal. Cameron was the extreme. She did it all, and still managed to go to work on Monday. I am at work, and I am thinking of taking Tuesday off, and I did no sessions at all!

Remember, “Pain is weakness leaving the body.”

Well, how are your arm positions? That will tell you whether you’re weak or not. :P

[...] It’s no wonder we all conjure a certain image when we think fencing master: precise, hard, humorless. I think at some point you just become that way if you let yourself. I watched Maestro Beguinet for those ten days and marveled at his patience and good humor, all while still managing to be precise; he has been at it for decades. He is a model to aspire to, and I think that is the biggest lesson I will take away from Coaches College: you can be precise and a stickler for detail without becoming a monster. [...]

Here are a couple of macro shots from a trip to Dehart Park in Stuart, VA. We go to this park quite a bit, but this time I took along our camera. This was before I got my new camera, which I am still playing around with and getting accustomed to, [...]

I think I mentioned that the pirates of the Downtown Fencing Club had gathered together a few barques and set off to bring terror to a whole other city and state. In that mention I think I promised some pictures. Well, few as they are, I deliver as promised. On [...]
