I think he might’ve thought I was gay…

So, yeah, see my yarn and needles? I was, originally, just going to ask my mom to borrow a set of her many needles, and some spare yarn, but I noticed how cheap they were at Wal★Mart (five bucks total for what’s pictured) and I decided it was worth it to not end up with girly colored needles.
I haven’t bought any books. I wanted to try the intertubes first. The first site I came across in my search seemed promising; there were lots of well drawn diagrams. The written descriptions of the techniques, though, were horrendous. I tried and tried to follow them, just trying to get the whole casting on thing down, and really wanted to jam the needles in my eyes by the end of it. I did a couple more searches and found more and more sites that were just the same. They even used some of the same diagrams! Finally, I came across KnittingHelp.com. Here, there be videos!

I had to watch the casting on video a couple of times, but now I’m doing it like a champ. Her technique is way better than the one described on all those sites with the diagrams and the circles and the arrows and the paragraphs of cryptic instructions. I watched her knit video and the purl video and then did the little bit you see pictured above. I just did this with a scrap of yarn, and it’s not really intended to be anything, but damn if I didn’t feel all accomplished when I got that far.
The site is very comprehensive, with videos describing all sorts of techniques. There’s a forum for getting community help, and the videos are short and well done. It’s a fantastic example of a valuable, free, resource on the net. I wish there were more sites this well done, regardless of topic.
Anyway, I think I’m off and running. I still don’t have any idea what I want to do as a first project. Whatever it is, though, it’s going to be black. Heh.
